Korean Pine or Korean Cedar / Pinus koraiensis
It is a tall tree (40-50 m) with a crown diameter of 1.5-2 m. Annual growth is 10-25 cm in height and 10 cm in width. At the age of 35, it grows up to 7 m in height. The crown is dense, dense, narrow-pyramidal or cone-shaped, symmetrical. Very decorative. Becomes thinner with age.
The root system is underdeveloped, the root stem and numerous lateral roots lie in the soil at a depth of up to 1 m. Young shoots with densely pubescent short red hairs, thin. Blooms in May-June. Male spikelets are yellow, female spikelets are reddish-purple. Cones are large, up to 17 cm long and up to 8 cm wide, erect, initially gray-green in color, later brownish, elongated-ovoid, with beautifully recurved seed scales.
The cones ripen in August-October in the second year after pollination; when ripe, the cones do not open and fall off along with the seeds. Begins to bear fruit from 25-30 years. Seeds 1.5-1.7 cm long, dark brown in color, wingless, with thick woody skin, edible. The average harvest from one tree is 500 cones, which contain up to 140 nuts.
Location: prefers acidic, humus, rocky soils moderately rich in nutrients. The tree is wind resistant. Light-loving, but at a young age can grow in a small shade. Can tolerate slight waterlogging. Poorly tolerates transplantation in adulthood.
