Greek fir or Kefalin fir / Abies cephalonica

An evergreen tree with a narrow-cone-shaped crown with lower branches lowered to the ground. At the age of ten, the height of the Greek fir is 5.0 - 5.5 meters. It grows very slowly, the annual growth for the year is 5.0-5.5 centimeters.

In Kefallin fir needles are dark green above and light green below, but on top the white stripes reach the middle of the needles, and below there are two pronounced stripes. Therefore, the needles on the tree look gray. The needles are short, 15-20 mm long and 1.5-2.5 mm wide with a sharp tip, placed tightly on the shoots, in a spiral.

Cones are narrow, cylindrical with a blunt top, first purple, then the color changes to red-brown. The length of the cone varies in parameters 8 - 16 centimeters, width - 2.5 - 3.8 centimeters.

Kefalonia fir has been used in horticulture since 1824. Due to its slow growth, it is suitable for landscaping even small-sized gardens, as well as for planting on alpine slides as a tapeworm. This tree, with its dense, dove-colored, narrow-cylindrical crown, looks very good as a Christmas tree.

Greek fir is a heat-loving acclimatized tree that not only winters in the climate of Western Ukraine, but also bears fruit. Young seedlings of Greek fir need shelter for the winter, while adult trees hibernate without it. Without frosting maintains frosts to - 25 degrees Celsius. It easily tolerates penumbra, can grow even in the shade, but in this case the crown will not be so dense. Moderately moisture-loving, sensitive to stagnant moisture, loves well-drained soils. This type of fir is not whimsical to the soil.
