Linden American seeds

Linden American or American basswood / Tilia americana - deciduous tree, reaching a height of 20 - 35 (up to 45) meters with a trunk diameter of up to 1.2 measures. The crown is spreading, the branches are often drooping. The bark is gray or light brown with narrow fissures. The roots are large, going deep and wide. Annual shoots are smooth, reddish-gray, becoming light gray in the second year, then dark brown or brownish-gray, covered with dark projections. The kidneys are dense, pointed-oval, smooth, dark red in color, with two covering kidney scales.

The leaves are simple, alternate, oval or heart-shaped with unequal bases (the larger edge is facing the shoot), with a long thin petiole, a coarsely serrated edge and a pointed apex. It differs from other types of linden in larger leaves. The size of the leaves is 10-15 cm in length and width (sometimes up to 25 cm). Young leaves are pale green, dull, mature leaves are dark green, smooth, shiny above, paler below, with tufts of rusty-brown hairs at the bases of the primary veins. Small stipules fall shortly after bud break. Autumn color of leaves from yellow-green to yellow.

Small (10-14 mm in diameter), yellowish-white, fragrant flowers are collected 6-20 in drooping umbellate inflorescences. Whitish-green bracts are attached in the middle of the pedicels. The flowers are regular, with five petals and sepals, numerous stamens and a five-celled upper ovary. Flowering occurs at the beginning or middle of summer. The main pollinators are bees.
