Reed canary grass (Phalaris) has advantages as an ornamental plant, enhancing landscapes with its fast-growing, lush foliage and decorative cultivars. It is valued in agriculture as a forage crop, providing high-quality silage and hay, and also as an energy crop for biofuel production. Additionally, it is used for erosion control, slope and ravine stabilization, and as raw material in the chemical and construction industries.
The most popular cultivar is “Picta.”
Stems of this variety can reach up to 1.5 meters in height. The plant features attractive linear green leaves up to 2 cm wide with longitudinal light stripes. The cultivar prefers well-lit areas with moist soil.
It is often planted near freshwater bodies and can successfully grow even in shallow water up to 15–20 cm deep.
In mixed plantings, Phalaris pairs well with phlox, irises, and other ornamental grasses. It can also be used as a groundcover plant.
