Matthiola fragrans - an annual aromatic plant, 30–50 cm tall. Flowers are small, 1.5–2 cm in diameter, lilac-purple in color. During blooming, they release a strong and pleasant fragrance. Used for decorating flower beds, rock gardens, balcony boxes, and garden vases.
Fragrant matthiola is a cold-resistant annual plant valued for its evening scent and easy care. Grown in open ground, on balconies, and in containers. Prefers sunny or slightly shaded areas with loose, moderately fertile soil. In autumn, dig the soil with added humus; in spring — loosen and level the surface. Sow in early spring directly into the ground when temperatures reach +10…+12 °C. Seed depth — 0.5–1 cm, row spacing — 20–30 cm.
Care includes regular loosening, weeding, moderate watering without overwatering, and feeding with balanced fertilizers. Matthiola does not require transplanting and tolerates short-term frosts well. Flowering begins 40–50 days after germination and lasts until late summer. Flowers open in the evening and release a strong pleasant aroma. Propagated by seeds; repeat sowings can extend the flowering period.
