Soris or soriz / Sorghum orysoidum - it is a hybrid of rice and sorghum. Soris can be grown throughout Ukraine. The cultivation practices are the same as for corn, as are the sowing dates. The only difference is that soris tolerates drought better than corn. It is undemanding to soils and highly drought-resistant.
A Moldovan food variety, with plants reaching up to 80 cm. One grain produces 3–5 stems, each bearing a panicle with up to 2,000 grains. Its taste is similar to rice, although in appearance this crop closely resembles sorghum. The plant reaches a height of 1.2 m, with broad leaves covered with a waxy coating on the upper surface. The inflorescences are dense. When fully ripe, the grain in the inflorescence turns pink. Soris tillers well: one planted grain can produce a plant with three to five stems, each of which bears a panicle.
Porridge cooked from soris grains tastes practically no different from rice porridge, but removing the husks from the grains at home is problematic. Thanks to its simple cultivation practices, soris can provide domestic poultry and livestock with feed for the winter.
It can also be grown as an ornamental plant. Soris panicles are beautiful when fully ripe, and the plant forms a lush, medium-sized bush.
The best preceding crops are cereals, legumes, potatoes, and cucurbits. It should not be sown after Sudan grass or sunflower.
The soil is prepared in autumn, and harrowing is carried out in spring. Fertilizers are incorporated under the plow in autumn.
Soris should be sown at the same time as corn. The optimal period is May, when the threat of return frosts has completely passed.
Row spacing: 35–40 cm.
Seed sowing depth: 4–5 cm. Rolling the soil after sowing is beneficial.
The crop can be harvested after the seeds have fully ripened. However, the main problem is seed moisture. If the plants remain in the field too long and the autumn weather is rainy, the seeds will absorb excess moisture. In this case, storing them will be problematic. Therefore, the key point is to thoroughly dry the seeds after harvesting.
