Common privet or European privet, or wild privet / Ligustrum vulgare
Deciduous, densely branched shrub up to 5 meters tall. Leaves oblong-ovate or lanceolate, glabrous, leathery, dark green above, lighter below. The flowers are small, white, fragrant, in dense erect panicles up to 6 cm long. Blooms in the first half of summer for 20-25 days. The fruits are shiny, berry-like, black drupes, remaining on the bushes until January.
In youth, it grows rapidly, is quite frost-resistant, withstands short-term temperature drops to minus 30°C, is drought-resistant, puts up with different types of soil, grows well on soils containing lime, even tolerates slight salinity. It grows well in urban conditions, it is well cut, forming dense, shape-retaining hedges and various shapes. Propagated by seeds, root offspring, layering, woody and green cuttings. Often used as a stock for other types of privet, lilac, olive.
One of the best shrubs for hedges, edges, undergrowth in a group of trees with a through crown. Excellent material for curly haircuts. Decorative forms are good in single and loose group plantings.
