Umbrella magnolia or simply umbrella-tree / Magnolia tripetala - is a species of flowering plant belonging to the genus Magnolia of the Magnolia family (Magnoliaceae).
A deciduous tree 10-12 meters high, with a trunk 30-45 centimeters in diameter, with a tent-like, sometimes multi-topped crown. Shoots are green at first, then turning brown, sometimes with a waxy bluish coating; the bark of old branches and trunk is light gray, smooth, with numerous, small, bubble-like nodules.
The kidneys are bare, brownish-green, fusiform, 4-5 centimeters long, 0.6-1.2 centimeters in diameter. Leaves collected at the ends of shoots, leathery, oblong-obovate, 20-60 centimeters long, 20-25 centimeters wide, pointed at the top, with a wedge-shaped base, at first softly silky pubescent, then glabrous above, greenish-gray below, rarely pubescent. Petioles 1.5-3.5 cm long.
The flowers are creamy white, unpleasantly smelling, 15-25 centimeters in diameter, cupped; perianth of 9-12 lobes; the outer 3 lobes are narrowly obovate, bent downwards, light green, 10-12 centimeters long, 3-3.5 centimeters wide, the inner ones are creamy white, 9-13 centimeters long and 1.5-4 centimeters wide, the smallest are located in the center.
The fruits are cylindrical or ovoid, about 7-10 centimeters long, bright pink at full maturity.
Flowering in April - May. Fruiting in August - September.
