Boxwood - is one of the most popular ornamental shrubs in landscape design. However, in recent years, these plants have been dying en masse due to a dangerous pest — the box tree moth (Cydalima perspectalis).
This moth originates from East Asia, where it caused little damage. But in Europe — including Ukraine — it has proven to be extremely aggressive. It was first recorded here in 2014, and by 2022–2023, mass boxwood infestations were observed in the Cherkasy region.
The Real Threat — the Caterpillar
The greatest damage is caused not by the moth itself, but by its caterpillars — dark green with black stripes. They devour boxwood leaves and young shoots, leaving bare branches. Several generations can emerge in one season, making control especially difficult. Affected shrubs can dry up in just 2–3 weeks.
Protection and Treatment: Effective Products
Insecticides for Caterpillar Elimination:
- «Engio» — a broad-spectrum systemic and contact insecticide. Most effective in the early stages of infestation.
- «Aktellik» — a contact and fumigant insecticide that penetrates hard-to-reach parts of the shrub. Particularly effective against older larvae.
Fungicide Prevention and Complex Treatment:
- «Phytodoctor for Conifers and Ornamentals» + «Thiofen» — a powerful fungicidal combo for preventing secondary fungal infections that can develop in weakened plants.
Dosage: 5 ml “Phytodoctor” + 10 g “Thiofen” per 10 liters of water.
Fertilizer for Immunity Support:
- «Agrosilica for Coniferous Plants» — a mineral fertilizer that strengthens plant tissue, boosts photosynthesis, and improves resistance to stress and pests.
Guidelines for Effective Control
- Begin treatments in spring at the first signs of pest activity.
- Repeat spraying several times per season, rotating products to avoid resistance.
- To protect bees, cover treated plants with agrofiber or mesh after application.
- In cases of severe infestation, it's best to dig up and burn the plant. Then thoroughly till the soil.
With a timely and consistent approach, you can preserve the beauty of your boxwood and prevent its decline.
